Have we reached our technological limits?

If you could think of our computers in 2020, what would they look like? What amount of processing power would they have? For me, that's difficult to think about, it's unbelievable that a processor in the future would have 18-20 cores each running at 7-8GHz each. 128GB RAM, we do have that today, but it's unnecessary, and do we need that in the future for our programs/games? Is our laptops getting any thinner or batteries and displays any better? Those are some of the question I might ask myself.

Think about any person in the 1990's that were familliar with the technology back then. Would they believe that we would end up with processors like the i7 running 4.3GHz on 4 cores? The GeForce GTX690/Titan and our incredible graphics, operative systems, vast connectivity across the globe wirelessly? (Yes, the internet came back in the 90's, but not nearly as it is right now). 16, 32 or even 64GB of RAM? That was most of their hard-drive space back then.
Would they even dream about laptops as thin as just an inch capable of doing advanced tasks and displaying the graphics that we have today?

What do you think technology will be in 2020? I think there might be a tablet with the same processing power as our i5 series today in a size of an iPad Mini. For the desktops and laptops (if they're still made), I really don't know. Maybe we have reached our limits, or we're near to reach it. We would probably think back at the year 2013 where we had our weak laptops and bad graphics. Ok, graphics are close to realistic now if you look at i.e CryEngine 3, so we won't be saying that.

The mit to technology is how far the human mind can take it look at japan the creepy robots they're making are getting better all the time they even built a mech over there something which not to long ago was thought impossible.
In other words technology has no limits as long as humans can improve our existing tech
With this next human generation though we might be outta luck for laptops and home desktops hitting 20 core

Technology that is available to the public isn't necessarily what's available. There's a saying that Military intelligence is 5 years ahead of what we can actually touch in our hands.

Just a side note, the i7 isn't the most powerful processor intel has. They have a octicore Xeon processor with hyperthreading (8 logical + 8 physical) which is usually seen in high-end virtual machine hosts on servers. The processor itself costs roughly $1,000 - $1,400 and has it's own specific socket type with specific motherboard and chipset requirements. It's almost TOO fast.

I think laptops and desktops are heading out the door. Tablets and touch screens are swallowing the scene. And for good reason, they're fun and easy to use. Intel and AMD are working hard on their next generation of processors and APU's. And I'm excited to see what's in store for the enthusiast scene.

1990 would have never dreamed of a dual-core processor with 800MB of memory to run a touch-screen phone that has internet connectivity at all times, and display beautifully made graphics.

So, 2013 could have never dreamed of what, exactly? That's the question :) Technology is a scary thing to look at. But it's amazing at what we can accomplish as a species.

You were talking about the realism of CryEngine 3? Check this out

In the gaming field, all I ask for is truly vivid dynamic lighting and shadows. So far pretty much every company out there skimps on that, seeing how lighting and shadows take up a lot of video performance.
