Could I bind the key I actually have as "explode" (basically a different version of kill) to backwards?

So S = explode, L = backwards, basically.

No. That would be cheating.
Only use your s key (You can use explode)

I have yet to rebind my 's' key to backwards, but I did the challenge. I also did it on Swedish chef mode.
And then everyone else did it.
